It's been over a weeks since I got back from Battle Mountain. The amount of photos that I took was more than any other trip out there. Of course it doesn't take too much effort to get a few hundred pictures these days. It's not like those long gone film years. Back then you would have to decide how many photos you were going to take before you left on your trip because you never knew if you would be able to get film where you were.
Back in the 80s I might have planned 10 rolls of 24 exposure film for a trip like the World Human Powered Speed Challenge. Of course you would need to know what sensitivity of film to get as well based on lighting conditions. Then you would be stuck sometimes with 1000 ASA (ISO) film in your camera from an earlier shoot that you didn't finish, and you really needed 200 ASA. That's one thing I don't miss from the film days.
When I first transitioned into digital photography I was still reserved with the amount of pictures that I took. Eventually I got used to the fact that I didn't have to be so conservative with my shooting. In some ways it hurts you because you might take less time to compose a shot, or you just don't pay attention to all the details like you did with film. At times I still find myself taking the extra time I like I used to, and that pays off with much better images.
The photo above took me a little time to plan for prior to the shot. I established the area I wanted to take the photo minutes before the bike came. Then I panned the shot at about 1/250th of a second, and let the camera choose the aperture. Now I wonder what it would look like with less background blur. Overall it's a tradeoff. I wanted to have a slight feeling of motion, and at the same time some nice landscape. Well, there's always room for improvement.
